Product Description After 28 years and 10 albums, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will release their very first anthology, featuring the group's favorite and most popular songs culled from each of their albums, including their two raucous live releases. Columbia. 2005. Amazon.com Since their humble beginnings in 1977 the Dirty Dozen Brass band has championed the sound of lowdown horns from the streets of New Orleans to the entire world. The band’s first, long overdue, multi-label anthology takes music from ten albums and stuffs it all onto one disc, resulting in 80 minutes of the most lively sounds you’ll hear this side of Bourbon St. From spirituals ("Just a Closer Walk with Thee"), to R&B (Marvin Gaye’s "Inner City Blues"), Crescent City classics ( "Cissy Strut"), covers ("Bongo Beep") and groove-happy originals, the horn, percussion and later guitar augmented outfit keeps the funk flames fanned. Greasy and fluid sousaphone bass parts by mainstay Kirk Joseph kick up the second line dust, while the punchy five piece horn section blows with the intensity of a Crescent City hurricane, both in unison and taking solos that move from soul to jazz and back again. These fifteen songs only scratch the surface, as the band’s remarkable collaborations with and are MIA. The compilers, instead, successfully chose tracks representative of the group’s versatile jazz and roots approach. It’s nearly impossible to play this album and stay seated, and who would want to? The compilation captures the heart of New Orleans’ most passionate and well-known brass band that finds the funk regardless of which genre they decide to delve into. --Hal Horowitz
