He was a R.O.T.C. cadet and received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia. He went to medical school and did his urologic residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He and his wife Karen have been married twenty-nine years and have three children.
