Reviewed By Tiffany Ferrell for Readers' Favorite Sending Balloons to Heaven by Lindsey Coker Luckey is a story about a young girl who lost her grandmother recently. Her mother tells her that heaven is a beautiful place and that she'll see her grandmother again someday. This makes the child sad because even if her grandmother is in a good place like heaven, she still misses all the things she used to do with her grandmother but can't do anymore. The little girl stares up at the sky, hoping to see her grandmother with her angel wings. She gets very sad knowing she won't see her anymore. Her mom has an idea to send messages of love to heaven for Mimi to see. Bringing out a pink balloon, the color of her granny's favorite flowers, she tells the little girl that they can let the balloon go as a gift because it will float straight to heaven. Even though her Mimi is in heaven, she still can send her balloons up to heaven to let Mimi know how much they miss her. I enjoyed reading Sending Balloons to Heaven by Lindsey Coker Luckey. It has a bittersweet storyline that I don't feel is discussed enough with children. Death is a very hard subject for even some adults to understand and accept, let alone a child. It drives home the feeling that all of us had at one point in our lives when we lost someone close to us. You know that they are in a better place, but you still cannot help but feel sad and heartbroken; no longer seeing this loved one like you used to, and to find yourself looking for them. The plot is straightforward and well written, and the characters are very relatable. The illustrations by Carlos Varejão are beautifully done and make a good visual aid for a younger audience. Sending Balloons to Heaven is a book I would recommend to my friends with children.
