European Elderflower (Sambucus nigra) comes from the elder tree, a flowering shrub in the honeysuckle family. All parts of the elder tree, including elderberries and elderwood, have been used in folk medicine and ancient rituals since around 2000 BC. The Celts used to plant elder trees on the graves of their loved ones, believing that the elderflower blossoms were evidence of happy souls.
