Landing, craft, vehicle, personnel (lcvp) or Higgins boat is a type of boat used during world War II and later, for transport and landing of supplies, small vehicles and soldiers. They were used on a mass scale during D-Day (June 6, 1944), operation torch in North Africa, and in the fighting in the Pacific at the Battle of Guadalcanal, Gilbert Island, Philippines, iwo Jima and Okinawa. A Jeep and 12 soldiers, or 3.6 tons of cargo. It could reach speeds of up to 12 knots (14 mph, 22 km/ h). The boat was armed with a 0.30 cal (7.62 mm) machine gun operated by two riflemen.
